Online tools often ask for numbers like the victim’s age and income and then output a broad range. That can be useful for learning the categories courts recognize—but it doesn’t account for the details that decide value in real cases.
In California, outcomes are heavily influenced by issues such as:
- How clearly liability can be proven (who was at fault, and why)
- Whether causation is medically supported (how the incident led to death)
- Whether fault is shared (comparative responsibility can reduce recovery)
- How well damages are documented (funeral expenses, financial support, companionship losses)
That means two families can enter the same “inputs” into a calculator and still end up with very different results.
