In the minutes and days after a fall, the choices you make can affect both medical outcomes and what evidence is available later.
- Get medical care immediately. Head injuries, fractures, and internal bleeding risks aren’t always obvious right away.
- Ask for the incident details in writing. Request copies of the incident report, shift notes, and any fall documentation the facility uses.
- Track a timeline while it’s fresh. Note the date/time, where the resident was, what staff said, what symptoms appeared, and when medical evaluation occurred.
- Secure your own copies of key records. This includes discharge paperwork, imaging reports, and follow-up provider notes.
If you’re contacted by the facility or their insurer, it’s wise to pause before giving a recorded or detailed statement. A brief comment can unintentionally adopt the facility’s version of events—something we help families avoid.
