Right after the incident (and while staff are documenting), your priorities should be medical and evidence-focused.
- Get immediate medical evaluation. Even if the resident “seems okay,” head impacts and internal injuries can worsen later.
- Ask for the incident documentation. Request the fall report, shift notes, and any post-fall assessments.
- Track the timeline. Write down the time of day, where the resident was, what they were doing, who witnessed the event, and what staff said afterward.
- Preserve communications. Keep emails, call logs, discharge papers, and any letters from the facility or insurer.
In many Arizona cases, what’s recorded in the hours after a fall can strongly influence whether a claim is supported later. Waiting to gather information can leave gaps that are difficult to fill.
