Before you worry about “how much,” make sure your claim is built on a solid record.
- Get medical care right away (urgent care or ER, especially for puncture wounds).
- Report the incident promptly to the appropriate parties (property owner/manager, and if applicable, local animal control procedures).
- Document while details are fresh: date/time, where it happened, dog description, and any witnesses.
- Take photos of the wound and surrounding area as soon as possible (and again after treatment if there’s swelling, bruising, or scarring).
- Be careful with statements to the other side/insurance—what you say can be repeated back to dispute liability.
If you’re contacted by an adjuster, pause before giving a detailed recorded statement. Many Minden residents assume they’re being “helpful,” but inconsistent phrasing can become a problem later.
