In the Fitchburg and Madison-region communities, exposures commonly occur in scenarios tied to everyday life and ongoing development, such as:
- Residential and small commercial remediation: cleaning after leaks, mold-related work, pest control chemicals, or “hidden” chemical residues during turnover.
- Construction and maintenance work: welding/cutting with contaminated coatings, drywall dust mixed with chemical residues, or improper handling of solvents and adhesives.
- Workplace incidents: inadequate ventilation, missing or mismatched PPE, and rushed cleanups after a spill.
- Product and label problems: unclear warnings, missing Safety Data Sheets (SDS), or containers transferred without proper identification.
Because these events can be brief—or spread across days and shifts—residents sometimes delay treatment or don’t realize the chemical link until symptoms persist.
