In a city with dense neighborhoods and older housing stock, exposures can occur where hazards are harder to identify:
- Ventilation problems in apartments and basements (fumes getting trapped during treatment or remediation)
- Renovation and demolition where dust and chemical residues spread beyond the work area
- Seasonal pest control and cleaning that may involve strong chemicals used too close to living spaces
- Worksite safety breakdowns during high-traffic periods when contractors are trying to finish quickly
In many of these situations, the chemical may not be named on-site, labels may be missing, or occupants may only notice symptoms later. That’s why the “what happened” investigation is just as important as the medical record.
