When you’re dealing with chemical exposure, the goal is to protect health and preserve the facts.
- Get medical care immediately (urgent care or ER if symptoms are significant). Tell the clinician what you were exposed to, even if you’re not 100% sure.
- Ask what to write down: request that your chart includes symptoms, timing, and exposure circumstances (odor, visible fumes, skin contact, ventilation problems, and who was present).
- Save the evidence you can without creating additional danger:
- product containers, labels, and SDS/safety sheets if you have them
- incident photos (spill area, signage, ventilation fans, PPE)
- any texts/emails from an employer, property manager, or contractor
- Avoid recorded statements until you’ve spoken with a lawyer. Adjusters and employers may request statements early, and those comments can be used later to minimize causation.
