Most calculator results are built for broad averages. In Independence, that can be misleading because burn injuries are rarely “average.” Two people can have the same percentage of burn area and still have very different outcomes depending on:
- whether the burn involves the hands, face, joints, or airway
- whether treatment required specialty burn care (not just a brief ER visit)
- whether there are scarring, nerve pain, infection risk, or functional limits
- how clearly the medical records connect the burn to the incident
When a tool doesn’t account for those factors, it may underestimate long-term care needs—or overestimate a case that resolves quickly with minimal lasting effects.
