Most online burn injury calculators use simplified assumptions, but burn injuries often change week to week. A burn that looks manageable at first can deepen, scar more than expected, or lead to lingering problems like:
- nerve pain or reduced sensation
- limited range of motion (especially if a burn involves hands, wrists, elbows, knees, or ankles)
- scar sensitivity, heat intolerance, and ongoing scar care needs
- breathing issues if there was smoke exposure
Because of that, a generic estimate can be either too low (if your treatment becomes extensive) or too high (if your injuries heal with minimal long-term impact). The better approach is to use a “calculator” as a starting point for questions—not as a forecast.
