Many calculators work by asking for basic information (age, incident type, some financial numbers) and then generating a broad range. That range can be directionally helpful, but it often breaks down in cases where Illinois disputes are common, such as:
- Fault is contested (e.g., multiple vehicles, unclear right-of-way, or witness uncertainty)
- Causation is disputed (defenses may argue the death resulted from something other than the incident)
- Insurance coverage is complicated (multiple policies, unclear applicability, or delayed coverage positions)
- Comparative fault issues arise (defendants may claim the deceased was partly responsible)
In other words, the “math” can’t replace what Illinois adjusters and courts actually evaluate: the credibility of evidence, the timeline, and whether the facts satisfy legal standards.
