In the hours after a wreck, most people focus on pain and safety. That’s right. But for a strong uninsured motorist claim, you also want to preserve the evidence that insurers later claim is “missing.”
Do these quickly if you can:
- Get the crash report number and confirm where it was filed. Keep photos of the report information.
- Document the scene: roadway conditions, lane position, traffic controls, and any visible damage.
- Preserve contact info for witnesses (neighbors, other drivers, anyone who saw it happen).
- Start a medical timeline: even if symptoms are mild at first, follow treatment recommendations and keep every visit note.
- Write down your version of events while memories are fresh—what happened, what you noticed, and when symptoms began.
Avoid giving a recorded statement “to help move things along” before you understand how your words could be used to dispute causation or minimize injuries.
