After a crash where the other driver is uninsured, don’t rely on memory or quick verbal promises. Do these things in order:
- Get medical care right away (even if injuries feel “minor”). In California, your treatment timeline often becomes the clearest proof of injury and causation.
- Request the crash report and keep the report number. If the insurer later disputes facts, the report is often the anchor.
- Document what you can while it’s still fresh—photos of vehicle damage, the road position, traffic control (signals/signs), and any visible hazards.
- Record witness details. On local routes, people may move on quickly after the incident.
- Write down your own timeline (what happened, what you noticed, when symptoms changed). UM disputes frequently turn on consistency.
If you’re tempted to “speed things up” by sending a long, detailed statement to an adjuster, pause. In UM cases, what you say can be used to narrow coverage or minimize damages.
