In the days immediately after a wreck, what you do (and what you don’t do) can affect whether your injuries are taken seriously.
Focus on these actions first:
- Get medical care promptly (even if you think it’s “not that bad”). Some injuries show up later.
- Write down the timeline while it’s fresh: where you were coming from, what was happening right before impact, and what you remember about traffic flow.
- Preserve rideshare details: trip timing, pickup/drop-off info, and any app screenshots you can access.
- Capture scene evidence if you’re able: vehicle positions, road conditions, lighting, and any hazards near the crash location.
- Request the police report number if officers responded.
Avoid: giving a long recorded statement to an adjuster before you’ve had your facts reviewed. Insurers often ask questions designed to narrow coverage or shift fault.
