Staircase injuries aren’t random. In Laredo and the surrounding area, the most common causes we see tie back to conditions that are easy to miss until someone falls:
- Lighting problems in common areas: Dim bulbs, delayed maintenance, or motion-sensor lighting that doesn’t illuminate steps consistently.
- Wear-and-tear on older stair materials: Worn treads, loose nosing/edges, or handrails that wobble.
- Clutter and transport during peak activity: Moving boxes, deliveries, event setup, or trash storage in stairwell areas.
- Weather and tracking inside entry stairways: Rain and humidity can contribute to slippery surfaces—especially when entry areas are cleaned but not properly secured.
- Delayed repairs after tenant/customer complaints: A hazard gets reported, but the fix is postponed.
When these issues exist, the question becomes whether the property owner or business had notice and failed to correct the hazard within a reasonable time.
