In California, many premises-injury disputes come down to whether the property owner or person responsible knew (or should have known) about the hazard before the fall.
Sierra Madre’s residential character can make this tricky. Hazards may be lingering for months—worn treads, loose handrails, uneven steps, dim lighting, or cluttered stair landings—especially in older buildings or properties that are maintained inconsistently. If you can show the condition existed long enough, or that someone complained, that matters.
What we focus on early:
- Whether prior maintenance requests or complaints exist
- The timing of inspections and repairs
- Photos/video that show the condition and lighting at the time
- Who controlled the stairs (landlord, property manager, business operator, or maintenance contractor)
