After a staircase fall, what you do in the first days can strongly affect how your claim is evaluated.
1) Get medical care and create a record Even if you think it was “just a stumble,” injuries such as fractures, sprains, nerve irritation, or back injuries can worsen. Seek treatment promptly and follow your care plan.
2) Document the hazard while it’s still there If you can do so safely, photograph:
- the steps and any visible wear or damage
- the handrail condition and height
- lighting conditions on the stairway/landing
- anything that obstructed safe footing (debris, clutter, uneven surfaces)
3) Report the incident If the fall occurred in a rental or business setting, ensure an incident report is filed when possible.
4) Write down details right away Include the time of day, what you were carrying (if anything), where you placed your foot, and whether you noticed warnings or lighting.
This is where an “AI checklist” can help you avoid forgetting details—but it’s not a substitute for getting your facts into a form an attorney can use.
