The first hours and days after a collision can affect whether coverage is accepted, whether liability is challenged, and how insurers view your injuries. If you can, prioritize:
- Document the scene while you still can: photos of the roadway/intersection, traffic control devices, and vehicle damage.
- Get medical care promptly even if symptoms seem minor. In Illinois, delayed treatment is a common reason insurers argue injuries weren’t caused by the crash.
- Preserve rideshare proof: trip confirmation, driver info, and any screenshots showing pickup/drop-off and timing.
- Avoid casual statements to insurance. In rideshare cases, what you say can be repeated, summarized, or used to dispute fault or the seriousness of your injuries.
If the crash involved an intersection or a turn where traffic was dense, it’s also helpful to note what was happening immediately before impact (for example: stopped at a light, merging, yielding, changing lanes). That context matters when adjusters try to narrow the story.
