In the hours after a collision, decisions you make can become evidence later. If you’re able, take these steps:
- Get medical care immediately (even if symptoms seem mild). Some injuries don’t show up right away.
- Document the scene while it’s still fresh. Photos of the crosswalk/intersection, street lighting, vehicle position, and any visible debris can matter.
- Write down what you remember. Time of day, weather, what signal you saw (if any), and how the vehicle was moving.
- Identify witnesses. People may have been waiting at a bus stop, walking a dog, or pulling into a nearby parking spot.
- Be careful with statements to insurers. Early answers can be used to minimize fault or argue the injuries are unrelated.
If you’ve already been contacted by an adjuster, you’re not alone. We often see Salem clients who gave a recorded statement before understanding how Utah injury claims are evaluated.
