Even when you feel shaken, a few actions can make a real difference:
- Get checked by a medical provider the same day if possible. Some injuries—like concussions, soft-tissue damage, or internal trauma—may not show up immediately.
- Document the scene while you can: take photos of crosswalks/signage, vehicle position, lighting conditions (especially at dusk), and any visible injuries.
- Write down details: time of day, direction you were walking, where you entered/entered the roadway, what you heard/observed, and the driver’s actions leading up to impact.
- Save witness information (names and contact info). In suburban areas, witnesses may not stick around long, and later you may not know who saw what.
- Be careful with insurance calls. In Texas, recorded statements and written summaries can be used to narrow or reduce your claim.
If you’re worried about “saying the wrong thing,” that’s exactly when legal guidance matters.
