Even before you “talk to a lawyer,” your early actions can shape the evidence your case depends on.
- Get medical care right away (urgent care or ER if needed). Delaying treatment can create unnecessary disputes about whether your symptoms were caused by the crash.
- Call the police and request an incident report if anyone was hurt. A report can help document the scene and the driver’s statements.
- Document the location while it’s still fresh: crosswalk markings, traffic signals, street lighting, weather, and anything unusual (construction cones, blocked sightlines, damaged curb ramps).
- Write down witness details. In smaller communities, people may not stay available long—so capture names and phone numbers immediately.
If the other side offers to “handle it quickly,” be cautious. Quick settlements often don’t account for lingering injuries that show up after the adrenaline wears off.
