Right after a pedestrian accident, the goal is simple—create a record and avoid avoidable mistakes.
- Get medical care immediately (even if symptoms seem minor). Some injuries—like concussions, internal trauma, and soft-tissue damage—may show up later.
- Report the crash and request the relevant information from responders/incident documentation when applicable.
- Capture the scene if you’re able: vehicle position, crosswalk or curb area, lighting conditions, traffic signals, and anything that affected visibility.
- Write down what you remember before it fades: direction of travel, what the driver did, timing of signals, and whether you saw headlights or lane changes.
- Be careful with statements to insurance. What feels like a harmless explanation can be used to reduce fault or deny causation.
