After a hit by a car while walking, focus on these immediate steps:
- Get medical care promptly. Some injuries don’t show up right away—especially head injuries, neck/back pain, and soft-tissue damage.
- Report the incident correctly. If police respond, make sure the report reflects where you were crossing and any statements from witnesses.
- Capture the scene while it’s still there. In town, lighting and signage can vary block to block. Photos of the crosswalk, street conditions, and your position after impact can matter.
- Write down details before they fade. Note the direction you were walking, what the traffic signal was doing (if applicable), and the approximate speed/distance you think the driver had.
- Do not give recorded statements until you understand your case. Insurance adjusters may ask questions that can be used later to dispute severity, timing, or fault.
