Right after an impact, the steps you take (or skip) can shape how your claim is evaluated later—especially in cases involving turning vehicles, limited visibility, or drivers who don’t stop.
If you can, prioritize this sequence:
- Get medical care immediately (even if you think you’re “mostly okay”). In New Jersey, documented treatment matters because injuries can worsen after the initial shock.
- Report the crash so there’s an official record.
- Capture the scene: crosswalk markings, traffic signals, lighting, vehicle position, skid marks, and any debris.
- Identify witnesses—people nearby at the time often remember details like where you were standing and what the driver did before impact.
- Preserve phone/video evidence if you have dashcam, security footage, or nearby recordings.
If the driver fled, time matters even more. A short delay can make it harder to obtain video footage and identify the vehicle.
