After you’re hit, the steps you take right away can affect what evidence exists for the months that follow.
1) Get checked by a medical provider—today, not “later.” Symptoms can show up after adrenaline fades. In Florida, documentation usually matters when insurance later argues the injuries were minor or unrelated.
2) If you’re able, write down the details before talking to insurers. Focus on: where you were crossing or walking, the direction of travel, the weather/lighting, and anything unusual (turning vehicle, sudden lane change, near-miss).
3) Preserve scene evidence while it’s still easy to capture. Even in suburban areas, people often have dash cams and phones. If you can safely do so:
- Take photos of the roadway and crosswalk markings (if applicable)
- Photograph vehicle position and any visible damage
- Note nearby businesses or homes where witnesses may be reachable
4) Be careful with recorded statements. Insurers may ask questions that sound harmless. In many cases, the safest approach is to have counsel review your situation before you provide a detailed account.
