In the hours after you notice something is wrong, the “right” steps matter—medically and legally.
- Get care first. If symptoms are severe or worsening, seek urgent or emergency medical attention.
- Ask for a medication reconciliation. Tell the treating clinician exactly what you were given (name on the label, dose/strength, instructions).
- Preserve proof while it’s fresh. Save the medication bottle(s), pharmacy label(s), discharge paperwork, and any after-visit summaries.
- Write down the timeline. Note when the medication was filled, when you started it, when symptoms began, and what follow-up you received.
Because Illinois cases often turn on documentation and causation, acting quickly helps ensure records reflect what happened.
