After a hit-and-run, adrenaline and shock are normal. Still, what you do early can strongly affect whether your claim is taken seriously later.
If you’re able to do so safely:
- Call 911 and ask for a traffic/incident response. Get a report number.
- Document the scene: street lighting, weather, lane position, and anything distinctive about the vehicle.
- Write down witness details before you lose the moment—names, phone numbers, and what they saw.
- Look for nearby cameras (gas stations, businesses, apartment buildings, and traffic cameras). In many areas, video retention is limited.
If you were injured: prioritize medical evaluation. In Utah, insurers commonly scrutinize whether injuries are consistent with the timing and type of crash—so your earliest treatment record can help connect the dots.
