After a hit-and-run, stress is normal. But your actions in the earliest window can make or break how insurers and investigators view your claim.
If you’re able:
- Call 911 and request an officer. A police report gives your claim a backbone and creates an official record.
- Ask witnesses for contact info (names and phone numbers). In Canyon, the same people may appear again through workplaces, school activities, or neighborhood circles—so getting it while they’re still nearby is critical.
- Record what you can remember while it’s fresh: direction of travel, lane position, approximate speed, weather/lighting, and any distinctive marks (panel damage pattern, unusual paint, stickers).
- Check for nearby video. Many businesses and apartment complexes have cameras, and footage is often retained for a limited time.
If you’re not physically able to gather information, focus on medical care first. Your attorney can still help reconstruct the event using the report, records, and available surveillance.
