If you’re able, your first actions should be about safety, documentation, and consistency. Start here:
- Get medical care immediately (even if you think the injury is minor). Tennessee insurers often scrutinize delays when injuries worsen.
- Report the crash and request a copy of the report number and documentation.
- Write down what you remember while it’s fresh: direction of travel, approximate speed, vehicle color/make/model, partial plate details, and anything distinctive (tail light shape, dents, stickers, etc.).
- Preserve evidence right away: photos of the scene, damage, and visible injuries; and if safe, note nearby businesses or traffic cameras.
Important: in the days after a hit-and-run, you may receive calls from adjusters. A recorded statement can sound routine, but it can also create confusion later if your memory changes under stress or if you unintentionally miss details.
