In the first hours after a fleeing-driver crash, your actions can affect whether evidence still exists.
- Get medical care first (urgent care or ER if needed). Your treatment records also help establish the link between the crash and your symptoms.
- Report the crash and make sure the report is completed accurately. If you remember details later, contact the reporting agency to supplement the information.
- Write down everything while it’s fresh, including:
- time of day and direction of travel
- vehicle description (color, make/model if known, distinguishing features)
- where the crash occurred (street/intersection/nearby landmark)
- whether the driver made any “tells” (braking, swerving, near-misses)
- Check for nearby video sources quickly. In Utica, footage may be stored briefly—especially from:
- gas stations and convenience stores
- retail parking lots
- nearby businesses with exterior cameras
- traffic cameras when applicable
If you’re able, take photos of visible injuries, vehicle damage, debris, and the surrounding roadway conditions.
