After a hit-and-run, your safety comes first. Once you’re stable, the next decisions you make can strongly affect whether your claim can be proven.
If you can, do these immediately:
- Call the police and make sure a report is filed. Even if you think the crash was minor, fleeing turns it into a high-stakes case.
- Write down what you remember while it’s fresh—direction of travel, vehicle color, any partial plate, and distinctive features (tire type, dents, stickers, lift kits, etc.).
- Take photos of: the scene conditions, damage, any debris, and visible injuries.
- Get witness contact info if anyone stays around. In smaller communities, people often want to help—but they also get pulled away quickly.
- Request footage from nearby businesses or residences if you know where it happened. In many West Plains locations, cameras may be pointed at entrances/parking areas and retention windows can be short.
Then—before you speak with insurers in detail—let your attorney review what you plan to say. A calm, consistent record protects your case.
