In the first hours after a driver flees, your best decisions are usually the least “legal-sounding.” They’re about protecting your health and keeping key proof from disappearing.
Do this first:
- Get medical care right away. Even if you feel “okay,” delayed symptoms are common.
- Report the crash to law enforcement and ask about the case number.
- Write down what you remember while it’s still fresh: vehicle description, direction of travel, approximate time, and any partial plate details.
- Photograph the scene if you can do so safely: damage, debris, road conditions, and any visible injuries.
Be careful with statements. Insurance adjusters may contact you quickly. You can be truthful without volunteering extra details that later become points of dispute. A short delay to get legal guidance can protect your claim.
