Your first decisions can affect how your claim is handled later. After a fleeing driver incident, prioritize this order:
- Get medical care immediately (even if you think the injury is “minor”).
- Call 911 and report the collision so an official record exists.
- Document what you can while it’s still fresh:
- the direction the vehicle traveled
- a partial plate (even a couple characters can matter)
- vehicle description (color, make/model if known, damage location)
- time of day and nearby landmarks
- Preserve evidence from the area:
- if you’re near businesses, ask whether cameras were running at the time
- if you were outside a home or community area, note any nearby doorbell/camera footage that may be retained briefly
- Be careful with insurer statements. In hit-and-run cases, what you say—even unintentionally—can be used to create doubt.
If you’re overwhelmed, that’s normal. The goal is simple: protect your health, create a usable evidence trail, and avoid statements you’ll have to “fix” later.
