Your priority is safety and medical care, but immediately after that, your goal is to preserve proof while Evanston’s fast-moving environment still has it.
If you can do so safely:
- Call 911 and ask that the incident be documented as a hit-and-run.
- Get the incident report number (even if you’re unsure about the process yet). Illinois claims often move faster when documentation is clean.
- Write down what you remember while it’s fresh: direction of travel, lane position, vehicle color/shape, anything distinctive.
- Photograph the scene if possible: traffic signals, skid marks, debris, weather conditions, and your injuries.
- Identify nearby cameras early (common in Evanston): businesses, apartment entrances, parking structures, and transit-area coverage.
Even if you’ve heard “AI can handle this,” real-world evidence collection still depends on timing and legal strategy. We treat the early window as critical.
