When the other vehicle flees, timing matters. Evidence disappears, witnesses get pulled into their own lives, and video systems often keep data for a limited window.
Right away (if you can do so safely):
- Get medical care and make sure your injuries are documented.
- Write down what you remember while it’s fresh: direction of travel, approximate speed, weather/lighting, and anything distinctive (scars, logo, dents, paint color, panel gaps).
- Locate nearby cameras: businesses, apartment complexes, gas stations, and traffic cameras in the area.
- Request the police report and keep the report number and officer information.
Within 48 hours:
- Follow up with any property owner/witnesses who might have video.
- Save everything related to the incident—photos, messages, medical paperwork, and time off work.
- Avoid recorded statements to insurers until you’ve talked with a lawyer.
