In other parts of Florida, a hit-and-run may be a “one-off” event. In Key West, the same kind of incident can become more difficult to document because:
- Pedestrian activity is constant (locals, workers, and visitors walking to restaurants, hotels, and attractions).
- Tourism-related vehicle mix increases the variety of possible vehicles (rental cars, scooters, shuttles, ride-share vehicles, and out-of-state plates).
- Surveillance footage is time-sensitive. Cameras at businesses and hotels may overwrite quickly, especially during busy seasons.
- Road layout and speed changes can create disputes about where the impact occurred and how it happened.
When a driver leaves, the case often turns into an evidence race. The sooner you start, the more options you preserve.
