After a hit-and-run, your priorities should be: safety, documentation, and legal strategy—roughly in that order.
1) Get medical care immediately (even if injuries seem “minor”). In California, early treatment records are often the difference between a claim that tracks to the crash and one that insurance labels as unrelated.
2) Document the crash while it’s still fresh. If you can do so safely, write down:
- The approximate time and location (near an intersection, parking area, or roadway segment)
- The direction the vehicle fled
- Any partial plate characters you remember
- Vehicle color, make/model features, and unique details (damage, lights, tire type)
- Witness names and contact info
3) Request the police report number and keep copies of everything. A report can be crucial for later identification efforts and for aligning timelines.
4) Be careful with recorded statements. Adjusters may ask questions that seem routine but can later be used to argue gaps in your memory or your injuries. You don’t have to answer without guidance.
