In the first minutes, your priorities should be safety and medical care. But once you’re stable, the “clock” starts for evidence.
If you can, do these things right away:
- Call 911 (or request an officer response) and give the best description you can. Even if you don’t know the plate, details like vehicle color, make/model, and direction of travel matter.
- Get medical attention promptly. California injury claims often turn on timing—delayed evaluation can become a target for the defense.
- Document the scene while it’s still fresh: photos of your injuries, where you were standing/standing lane, debris, and any visible damage.
- Write down everything you remember—sound, speed, lighting conditions, weather, and whether the driver appeared to brake or look back.
Why speed is critical in Imperial: surveillance footage and camera retention are often short-lived. If the crash happened near a business, warehouse area, or residential driveway, nearby systems may overwrite their logs quickly.
