After a forklift incident, the first priority is medical care. Then focus on protecting your ability to prove what happened.
Do this quickly if you can:
- Get checked by a medical professional even if the injury seems “minor.” In forklift cases, symptoms can worsen over days.
- Request a copy of the incident paperwork your employer prepares (or ask how to obtain it).
- Document the scene while it’s still fresh: exact location in the facility, lighting conditions, nearby dock doors, and any traffic flow markings.
- Write down names and roles of witnesses (drivers, supervisors, security, dock attendants).
- Keep all treatment records and any work restriction notes you receive.
Be careful about recorded statements. If someone from the employer or an insurer asks for an interview, pause and get guidance first. Early statements can be used to reduce or deny liability.
