Emergency room errors don’t always look dramatic at the hospital. Sometimes the problem is subtle at first—until follow-up care reveals what the ER missed.
Common Fair Lawn-area scenarios we see include:
- Return visits after discharge: A patient is sent home with instructions, then worsens within a short window due to what should have been recognized and addressed at the initial visit.
- Medication and allergy issues: Residents may be managing multiple prescriptions; errors involving dosage, allergy history, or drug interactions can quickly become dangerous.
- Missed red flags for acute conditions: Symptoms that should trigger expedited evaluation—such as severe pain, neurologic complaints, breathing issues, or infection concerns—can be undervalued during triage.
- Test results not acted on: Imaging or lab work may show abnormalities that weren’t communicated clearly or weren’t followed by appropriate next steps.
Even when outcomes are complicated by pre-existing conditions, emergency care still has to meet accepted standards. The question is whether the care provided was reasonable under the circumstances—and whether it contributed to the injury you’re now dealing with.
