In smaller communities and surrounding areas, it’s common for patients to arrive after a long commute, a shift change, or a family event—sometimes with symptoms that have already been developing for hours. In the emergency room, the first decisions are time-sensitive:
- What the patient reported at triage
- How quickly vital signs and abnormal results were acted on
- Whether follow-up instructions were realistic for the patient’s situation
