A settlement calculator can be useful for planning, especially if it helps you organize what usually goes into a claim—medical bills, time missed from work, and the impact on daily life. But a calculator cannot verify facts or weigh evidence the way an Illinois insurance adjuster or attorney will.
In real Harvey cases, the biggest reasons estimates can be off are:
- Unclear liability (who owned the dog, who had control at the time, and whether the dog was properly restrained)
- Injury severity that’s not fully documented yet (deep tissue injuries, infection, or follow-up care that arrives after the initial visit)
- Scarring or functional limitations that become clearer only after healing
- Recorded statements you made early on that don’t match later medical findings
A better goal than “finding your number” is using a calculator to understand what evidence you’ll need to support a higher demand.
