After a wreck tied to a malfunctioning component, the first days matter. In Texas, vehicles get repaired quickly, parts get swapped, and onboard data can be overwritten as systems are reset. If you wait, the story becomes harder to prove.
If you’re able, start with evidence you can control:
- Photos of the vehicle (damage, warning lights, affected areas, and any visible component issues)
- The police report number (if one was filed) and the incident date/time
- Repair estimates and invoices (even if you haven’t finished repairs)
- Any diagnostic printouts or codes from the shop
- Names and contact info for the mechanic or service department that inspected the vehicle
If the shop replaced a suspected part: ask for the old component—or ask whether it can be preserved for examination. Even when parts can’t be recovered, repair notes and documentation often become the backbone of the claim.
