In the first couple of days after a serious crash or accident, the goal isn’t to “solve the case.” It’s to prevent avoidable problems that can weaken a claim later—especially in North Carolina, where documentation and timing can make a difference.
Do these things first:
- Get medical care immediately and follow treatment instructions. If you can, ask providers to document symptoms, functional limitations, and results of key tests.
- Record what you remember while it’s fresh—where you were, what you saw, weather/road conditions, lighting, and any hazards.
- Preserve accident details: photos of injuries and the scene, contact info for witnesses, and copies of any incident or EMS reports you receive.
- Save receipts and records (medications, mileage to treatment, durable medical equipment, time missed from work).
Be cautious with statements. Insurance adjusters may encourage quick recorded statements. What you say can later be used to argue that symptoms were mild, temporary, or unrelated.
