In the days after a serious collision or injury, insurance adjusters often try to move quickly. They may ask for a recorded statement, offer early “relief,” or request documents before you have a complete medical picture.
In California, you generally want to avoid settling before you know:
- whether symptoms will improve or worsen,
- whether additional specialists or surgeries will be needed,
- how the injury affects your ability to work (including modified-duty limitations), and
- which parties may share fault (drivers, employers, property owners, contractors, or maintenance providers).
Once an early settlement is accepted, it can be difficult—sometimes impossible—to recover later if the injury’s long-term effects turn out to be more severe than expected.
