Right after a bicycle crash, your choices can strongly affect what insurers accept later. If you’re able, do these things as soon as you safely can:
- Get medical care the same day (urgent care or ER if needed). Even when you “seem fine,” symptoms can appear later.
- Take roadway photos: intersection layout, lane position, road debris, lighting conditions, and any signage or signals.
- Capture vehicle details: make/model, visible damage, tire position, and where the bicycle ended up.
- Write down a short timeline while it’s fresh—where you were headed, what you saw, and what the driver did before impact.
- Collect witness info from nearby residents, nearby businesses, or anyone who saw the crash.
If a driver or insurer contacts you quickly, don’t feel pressured to give a recorded statement right away. In Texas, early statements can be used to argue fault or reduce damages.
