The decisions you make early can strongly affect how insurers evaluate your claim later. Start with safety and documentation:
- Get medical evaluation promptly (even if you think it’s “just soreness”). SC insurers often scrutinize gaps between the crash and treatment.
- Document what you can while it’s still fresh: photos of the roadway, turn lane markings, crosswalks/signage, your bike position, and any debris.
- Write down the “ride details”: direction of travel, approximate speed (if you know it), traffic conditions, lighting (morning/evening), and where you first saw the hazard.
- Identify witnesses the right way: neighbors, people in nearby driveways, or anyone who saw the moment a driver turned/yielded (or didn’t).
If a driver’s insurance contacts you, be careful. In many cases, an early recorded statement can be used to argue you were partly at fault or that the injuries don’t match the crash. You don’t have to guess what to say—get guidance before you provide a detailed statement.
