Right after a bicycle crash, your best next steps are usually the ones that prevent avoidable problems later.
- Get medical care promptly (even if injuries feel “minor” at first). Delayed symptoms are common with concussions, soft-tissue injuries, and nerve pain.
- Document the scene while it’s fresh. If you’re able, take photos of:
- traffic signals/signage,
- vehicle positions,
- the roadway surface (potholes, gravel, debris),
- your bicycle damage and any visible injuries.
- Write down a timeline immediately: time of day, weather/lighting, what you saw right before impact, and what you remember about driver actions.
- Be careful with insurer statements. Insurance adjusters may ask for recorded details early. In Minnesota, what you say can be used to argue fault or minimize injury severity.
If you’re already getting calls from insurance, it’s okay to pause and get legal guidance before you give a detailed statement.
