Your next 30–60 minutes matter. Before you worry about paperwork, focus on three priorities:
-
Get medical care and document symptoms
- Even if you feel “okay,” injuries like concussion, soft-tissue damage, and fractures can worsen after adrenaline fades.
- Ask providers to note your mechanism of injury (how the crash happened) in plain terms.
-
Preserve evidence while it’s still available
- Take photos of road conditions, lane positioning, signals/signage, and any damage to your bicycle.
- If there are witnesses, write down names and contact info immediately.
-
Be careful with insurer contact
- Insurance adjusters may request statements early. In California, what you say can be used to challenge fault or reduce damages.
- If you’re unsure what to say, pause and get guidance before giving a recorded statement.
